The Economist. 2016. How to manage the migrant crisis. [ONLINE] Available at:
http://www.economist.com/news/leaders/21690028-european-problem-demands-common-coherent-eu-policy-let-refugees-regulate. [Accessed 05 January 16].
This is an article composed by the economist (a trusted magazine that publishes articles regarding the economic impacts of current events in the news), this article assesses the policy that Europe has taken so far both critiquing and comparing the response with the response of Eurasian nations such as Turkey. The article will be useful to both a) look into how the EU has reacted to the crisis and the effect this has had so far as well as b) Assess how the Media has reacted to the crisis.
Key Words/Ideas: Reasonable-The article states that refugees are reasonable in searching for new safety.
A Mess- One of the main points of the article is the lack of cohesion and thus the "mess" that has been created, this is also used to describe the state of foreign policy regarding immigration at this tough time.
Key Idea- That to properly manage the tough crisis that the EU finds itself in, there needs to be more cohesion and unity in order to have a combined policy that would allow both refugees and lawmakers to know where they stand
Key People- Angela Merkel, the German Prime Minister is calling for equal measures to the economist and is stating that Europe must stay unified in the face of adversity.
Al-Jazeera. 2015. Refugee crisis may force EU to rethink, update open-borders policy. [ONLINE] Available at: http://america.aljazeera.com/articles/2015/9/12/refugee-crisis-forces-eu-to-rethink-open-borders.html. [Accessed 05 January 16].
Much like the last article this commentary by Al-Jazeera on how the EU's hand has been forced into acting on this tough matter and how the EU may move forward from this point. All in All the article is mostly useful for contextual knowledge and doesn't provide primary references or quotes from people of interest. However, it explains many of the EU treaties that have been signed and these must be further researched if included in the Final Essay.

http://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/sep/02/how-many-refugees-should-britain-take-middle-east-syria-migrants. [Accessed 05 January 16].
This article will be useful in analysing the part of the British Government, calling on historical examples and quoting the politician, Yvette Cooper, who claims the UK should recieve more asylum seekers than has been proposed. It also specifically proposes that the UK could afford to take 1 asylum seeker for every 200 people and that this would be the best "formula" to decide how many asylum seekers to take in.
Queen's Speech May 27, 2015. (2016). 2nd ed. [ebook] London: British Government, pp.36-37. Available at: https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/430149/QS_lobby_pack_FINAL_NEW_2.pdf [Accessed 17 Apr. 2016].
This is an incredibly useful source for me to analyse the British position on the immigration crisis, the Speech contains an Immigration Bill that promises that the British Government will attempt to reduce immigration and protect jobs for 'natives'. The Bill contains a lot of emotive language that will be particularly useful to analyse in the English Language section of the essay.
Home Office, (2014). Vulnerable persons relocation scheme for Syrian nationals. London.
The VPR, as this scheme is often referred, was created in 2014, just before the migrant crisis, and aims to select the "most vulnerable" refugees and bring them to the UK for further protection. This scheme composed by M.P James Brokenshire, offers an insight into the British government and will give interesting material to analyse the hypocrysy of the government at hand.

Hi Max!
ReplyDeleteGreat to see you using this space for reflections.
I am currently writing my fourth (out of five) essays for my MA. (Each essay is 5000 words, so not so different to your EE).
For this unit I started using Cornell Note Taking for the first time, and I have found it really helpful. I would suggest you give it a go too, and see how you get on with it.

Have fun - and keep up the good work! Using this technology will be really helpful to you - as long as you are very methodical about it right from the start!
See you next week.
